Nine-year-old El Salvador gelding Greenrock Abbey joined the Deva Racing squad in May 2025 and looks a shrewd addition to the team. Now based with the prolific Newmarket trainer James Owen, this triple chasing winner is handicapped to add to his tally again soon.

The winner of a Tyrella point-to-point as a four-year-old, Greenrock Abbey cost £65,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival Sale in 2020 before going into training with Alan King, though he was transferred to the yard of Kerry Lee shortly afterwards. He hails from a smart NH family, being a near relation of the Gr.2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle winner Hebridean and the Listed-winning hurdler Lunar Display.

Despite displaying some promise over hurdles, it was as a chaser that Greenrock Abbey would really come into his own. He made a winning debut over the larger obstacles, justifying favouritism in a 2m novices’ handicap chase at Hereford in November 2022, and then won again two starts later by 13 lengths at the same track.

Placed on his next six outings, Greenrock Abbey climbed to a peak official rating of 113 in 2023 and appeared to be at the peak of his powers, complementing his consistency with versatility, as he would run well over varying different distances and no matter the underfoot conditions. However, his form began to deteriorate markedly entering the 2024/25 season, and his losing run was up to 15 by the time he joined James Owen.

The consequence of a spell in the doldrums was that Greenrock Abbey joined us as a very well handicapped horse, and there is no one better at rekindling a horse’s enthusiasm than James Owen. Greenrock Abbey finished third on his debut in Deva Racing silks at Worcester in June, was beaten a short head at Market Rasen on his next run, and then returned to the same venue to win a 2m3f handicap chase by 12 lengths from a mark of 82.

Revitalised by the addition of a first-time visor, Greenrock Abbey looked better than ever in beating a recent course winner at Market Rasen, and he remains some 20lb below his peak mark even after being reassessed. He still held every chance when tipping up four out at Cartmel on his most recent outing, and it is only a matter of time before he wins again.
